I recently campaigned for LLS Woman of the Year (GA Chapter) 2011, which was such an honor! I grew to love and appreciate LLS and their fight to find a cure for blood cancers! To continue with this great cause, I joined Team in Training, where I will raise funds and run the Women’s NIKE half marathon on October 16th in honor of survivor Mary Lou!
Initially I had no immediate connection to LLS, but was and am dedicated to care for someone I may not know. As I grew with LLS, I met many survivors, who have inspired and brought hope that WE can find a cure for blood cancers!
LLS has increased the survival rate of Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma from 52% in 1987 to 65% in 2008 with the targeted drug Rituxan®, Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia from 55% in 1987 to 95% in 2008 with the targeted drug Gleevac®, and many others. These statistics do not lie; WE can make a difference in someone’s life.
You will notice the picture banner from Woman of the Year of a young girl and of the Boy and Girl of the Year at the top of this letter. Each child was diagnosed with a blood cancer and is currently in remission. I have personally received testimonials of gratitude from their parents for taking a stand to make a difference. There is no known cause for blood cancer, but there is a way to fight it.
